How to Wash your Camera Strap ‘Anywhere’

As a photographer, cleaning the camera strap regularly is a hectic process. But in this blog post, you will learn how to properly clean your camera strap without damaging it.

To clean the camera strap you don’t need heavy accessories or any kind of tools we regularly see on YouTube videos. Instead, you can use some simple techniques and tips that you can follow anywhere in the world to simply clean your camera strap.

Over time, the strap can get dirty and smelly, especially if you use it frequently. In this blog post, we will discuss the steps you can take to properly wash a camera strap and keep it clean.

As I started to use the camera regularly attaching the neckband, I noticed that my camera strap is looking pathetic especially in public when sweat and dust attach to the camera strap. So to properly clean the camera strap I needed some extra tools and the problem is I cannot take those in my bag. So simply I followed these steps to properly clean the strap.

Step 1 Remove the strap from the camera or any other equipment.

This is basically a simple step to clean your camera strap. But before removing your strap, notice any damages. You have to remove the camera strap very carefully to avoid further damage.

And if you have attached the strap to your camera over a long period of time you might see some hurdles in removing the strap but gently remove the strap and do not use water to clean the strap immediately. First, take a soft cloth or any soft brush to remove the dust particles on your camera strap.

Step 2: Fill a sink or basin with warm water and a mild detergent

There are no proper cleaning liquids/solutions for the camera stub. So it is fine to use warm water with some cleaning detergent or a bar of soap. So fill the basin with warm water and some detergent and let it soak for a few minutes.

Do not use too much detergent. Avoid using harsh chemicals, as they may damage the material of the strap.

Step 3: Gently scrub the strap

Before soaking your camera strap in warm water, clean the camera strap with a soft cloth smoothly which will remove the dust and any other small particles attached to it. If some particles are attached too tightly to the strap, remove them with your hands.

Because while washing, it will tear down the camera strap. So once the soft cleaning is done with the soft cloth, you can soak the camera strap in the warm water in the basin.

Use clean water only (that will reflect the dust particles which cannot be seen outside). So after properly washing the camera strap softly, hang the strap to air dry. Use hanger clips in the middle of the camera strap while drying it.

Step 4: Clean the hardware

Washing the camera strap is not only washing the soft material right? The camera strap also has the hardware materials like rings and buckles. So if the buckles or rings are dirty then you can wash them with cloth. You can use any mild detergent and a soft bristle brush to clean the dust in the hardware.

Additional tips for cleaning a camera strap:

  • If the strap is made of leather, use a leather cleaner and conditioner to clean and maintain the material.
  • Avoid soaking the strap for too long, as this can cause damage to the material.
  • If the strap is very dirty or smelly, you can wash it in a washing machine using a gentle cycle and mild detergent.

Most people are confused to wash their camera straps. Especially the beginners they frightened to remove the camera strap from the camera and they think that washing the camera strap will affect the camera. But it is not. You can wash your camera strap anywhere with some proper care. If you use too much pressure to wash the camera strap it will start tearing up. So better handle it with care and use any soft cleaning cloths and detergents to wash the camera strap smoothly.
